Battle of the Biotech Hubs: North Carolina Biotech Center Vs. California Biomanufacturing Center Based (Original Article)
California has been in the spotlight recently over outspoken members of "Big Tech" or "Silicon Valley" management to move the CEO and boards office to the State of Texas for corporate cost reasons. However, there is another industry that is in the process to move jobs to California the Biotech Industry. There are two Biotech industry groups fighting for the biotech jobs in the era of COVID-19 to their respective areas. One the California Biomanufacturing Center which is based in Vacaville, CA and the other group is called the North Carolina Biotech Center.
Here is the review of the pro's and cons of North Carolina and California's battle for Biotech Jobs in their respective states.
Pros California Biomanufacturing Center, Vacaville, CA a planned Biotech corridor located halfway from Sacramento and San Francisco. This was recently announced in 2020 as a startup accelerator for biotech in the area. Leads to $2 billion in industrial development and 3.5 million and 10,000 jobs if finalized. Educational institutions in the area are UC Davis and Solano Community Colleges biology and biomanufacturing bachelor programs.
Pros for the North Carolina Biotech Center: Located in the research triangle area with its institutions and research centers. Recently issued 11 grants to companies and institutions for 2021 in the form of small business loans. 3 companies are developing possible candidates for FDA clinical testing in 2021. Lower cost of living than California.
Cons For California Biomanufacuring center: as of 2021 having to respond to the "California Exodus" when unrelated industries are moving their management to other states. The California Biomanufacturing center is over shadowed by the attention of "Silicon Valley", "Big Tech" and the issues surrounding gentrification and income inequality and the recent announcements by certain investors and management to move to Texas most notably over their tech cluster.
The Biomanufacturing center rise will have to wait for some time until after the pandemic or more tech jobs leave the Golden State and lower real estate values over time.
Cons for Biotech Center North Carolina overshadowed by the attention of the "Big Tech" branches in research triangle area. Subjected to political interference in the industry. Subjected to boycotts.
Verdict: If you want to be on the rise of the biotech industry on the west coast then join the California Biomanufacturing center. If you want an established hub then go for the North Carolina Biotech Center.
